TfS becomes Associated Partner in the Chem-X project

Together for Sustainability (TfS) is excited to announce its Associated Partnership in the Chem-X project, an innovative initiative designed to increase transparency of material information along the value chains served by the chemical industry, laying the foundations for  Digital Product Passports (DPPs). As a key content provider for the project, TfS will lead the development of guidelines focused on sustainability and circularity. This collaboration underscores TfS’s commitment to promoting sustainability throughout global supply chains, building on its established expertise in creating the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Guidelines.

What is Chem-X?

Chem-X aims to develop an open and collaborative digital data space to support the sustainable transformation of the chemical industry, with digital material passports (DMP) for chemicals and materials as the primary use case.  This approach supports sustainability goals by providing a framework for closing material cycles, thus promoting a circular economy and environmental protection. Simultaneously, digitalisation will enhance the efficiency of processes and communication across company boundaries.

The project’s key objectives include harmonising industry standards to promote consistency, simplifying compliance with both voluntary and regulatory data transparency requirements, and encouraging circular business models.

The initiative is funded by the German Ministry of Economy and Climate Action, and will run for two years until the end of November 2026.

A key component of the project is the development of data models that allow for automated data exchange and facilitate the creation of digital product passports for customers.

What is TfS’ role in Chem-X?

TfS plays a crucial role in the project by developing a harmonised content layer that includes metrics, guidelines and information models for DPPs.

Drawing on its experience with the PCF Guidelines, TfS contributions will focus on the following:

  1. Defining and prioritising critical sustainability and circularity metrics.
  2. Developing globally harmonised guidelines and information models specifically for the chemical industry.
  3. Ensuring compliance with regulations and promoting adoption across the industry.

TfS’s work will ensure that the resulting standards are practical, globally relevant, and compliant with emerging regulations, including the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).

Who is part of Chem-X?

Chem-X brings together 14 industry leaders and associations, including BASF, Covestro, DAW, Evonik, Henkel, Merck Group, Sika, Wacker as well as SAP, Siemens, Spherity, Cofinity-X, Catena-X and TfS.

We are proud to join this transformative initiative and are committed to driving meaningful change for a sustainable future.
